Happy Friday! It’s the final push before the weekend! Before you completely unplug from your hustle mindset, consider taking time this weekend to get ahead in your job search! Sure, career-related activities may be the last thing you want to think about after you leave the office at 5 p.m. Everyone wants to just relax, but the truth is the weekend can be a great time to cross off tasks on your job search to-do list. It’s hard to find the time during the week to invest in searching, so take advantage and do these 5 things to help yourself out this weekend.
1) Update your LinkedIn Profile. Or make one if you don’t have one.
Even if you aren’t into having an online presence, or don’t think you need a LinkedIn profile, make one. It can be a very powerful tool for job seekers or anyone looking to build their own personal brand. Many people worry that creating or updating their LinkedIn profile may set off red flags to their employer that they’re looking to jump ship, but this is rarely the case. Unless you publicize that you are seeking employment, most updates will be under the radar to your boss. LinkedIn is becoming increasingly popular as a social media platform, not just for job seekers, but for anyone active on the internet. Updating and using it won’t give you away. Make sure you use a professional headshot! No Snapchat screenshots!
2) Research 5 companies you’d like to work for
Searching for a new job can be incredibly overwhelming. It’s hard to narrow down where to begin, which companies are worth applying to, and which ones you should avoid. The more you know, the easier your job search becomes, so spend time doing some research and organize your notes on each company. Use an excel spreadsheet or with an app like Evernote to keep it all together. Websites like Glassdoor give an idea of the company culture, and there are more similar websites that allow employees to write reviews. Do some research on competitors, this is useful for interviews. Look at any news related to the company and investigate if you have anyone in your network currently employed to learn as much as possible. Knowledge is power, and it takes awhile to acquire what you need!
3) Connect with a friend in your network
Been meaning to reach out to an acquaintance who works for a company you’re interested in? Haven’t chatted with an old friend in your industry in awhile? Been playing that back-and-forth of trying to make plans for months? Try to get together this weekend! A quick drink, lunch or coffee on a Sunday is a great way to spend time with someone who could offer valuable insight and inspiration for your job search. Networking is so important, but it can be difficult to find the motivation to go to weekend networking events. This is a much more low-key way to connect with someone who could help you make your next career move.
4) Tweak your resume
Along with updating your online LinkedIn presence, it’s also super important to keep your other documents up to date. Take a look at your resume. Add any new responsibilities you’ve taken on, update the SEO and keywords, highlight important projects, and change up your resume based on the top companies that you’re interested in working for. This can be extremely helpful when you stumble upon a position you want that requires a fast application. You’ll be prepared with the best version of yourself, without having to frantically make edits before submitting.
